Straight from the Renaissance, the world of grottesche: candelabra panels where scrolling foliage sprouts dragons, winged chimeras, urns and draped canopies, painted in the luminous palette of old fresco decoration. Aged-parchment plates put theatrical masks at centre stage — feathered, moustached, half-human faces surrounded by trophies and scrollwork. A calligraphic series frames single ornate letters with ostriches, a peacock, fruit and flowering vases, in the manner of a sixteenth-century writing book, while dense black-and-white engravings and soft-toned baroque appliqués complete the picture. Apply the rice paper to furniture panels, doors, trays or boxes: the tall symmetrical designs sit beautifully on drawer fronts and cabinet sides, lending them that noble, hand-painted air only rice paper can give.
